Before the formation of Toto its members were session musicians for Steely Dan[3] Seals and Crofts[4] Boz Skaggs, Sonny and Cher. [5] Guitarist Steve Lukather was the band's lead singer.
About Toto
The group Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also highly acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs at the time) as well as bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The group took their name from a Latin word that translates to "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore all styles of music.
Toto's third release, Turn Back, was a failure in 1981. However they made amends with their fourth album, Isolation, which contained two hit songs, including the title song and Roseanna. The album and tour established them as a brand across the globe.
After a gap of couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in the year 1986. The album is a departure from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and includes some heavy rock. The album was their first to be certified platinum in North America.
During the recording of the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and are faced with financial difficulties. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name to a different producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and gives the band much-needed boost.
In 1999, the band release Mindfields and begins an extensive tour around the world. After a few months in Europe they come to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. The album features a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's coverage of Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

The following year, Toto toured together with Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band. This was the last time that all of Toto's original members appeared performing at the same time. After that, the group was again disbanded. However, Toto reunited in 2010 to perform a benefit show for the ALS Foundation. This was the first time all original Toto members were performing together for over 31 years. The original members were joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.

Toto has remained one of the most adored rock groups for more than three decades, scoring massive hits such as "Rosanna," "Hold The Line," and their 8X-platinum hit, "Africa." With a variety of influences, ranging from progressive rock to world rhythms, soul and jazz, the group continues to please their fans with their anthemic arena rock.
Despite their fame the group had to face a number of challenges in their final years. In 2002, keyboardist David Paich and drummer Greg Phillinganes took a medical leave of absence. Shem von Schröeck took over, but the band wasn't the same without Paich or Phillinganes. In 2008, a series of lineup changes as well as a series of disappointing albums led Toto to break up for a period of time. Toto returned to touring in 2012 after the release of their album 40 Trips Around The Sun.
The album was a return to their best form and the tour that accompanied it featured sold-out concerts in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion was made more exciting by the addition of guitarist Steve Lukather and bassist Shem von Schroeck, who both rejoined the band.
Toto's music is just as relevant as it was in the 1970s and 1980s and is growing in popularity with each new generation. Their success has made them a constant presence in pop culture, and their live performances are always filled with energy and excitement.
